The Skeksis do not have good intentions for the crystal. Their plans are to drain as much of its energy as possible in order to make themselves immortal. The Scientist (Mark Hamill) has been trying to take the power the crystal draws from the planet and engineer it to transfer its energy out for the Skeksis to absorb, but he keeps failing. At one point, he finds out that the crystal can take hold of him as it starts to drain his lifeforce. In the meantime, two Gelfling crystal castle guards, Rian (Taron Egerton) and Mira (Alicia Vikander), play games as they patrol, like stealing fruit from a couple of Podlings (servant creatures), and chasing each other back to the castle. Mira is a girl, so she uses her wings to beat him. When they recall the first time they kissed, they spot a spider-like creature they call a Spitter. They go to tell Rian's father and captain of the guard, Ordon (Mark Strong), about it, but he's about to go on a mission — escorting Skeksis lords The Scroll-Keeper (Neil Sterenberg) and The Collector (Awkwafina) to the city of Harar for a tithing ceremony.
Hollywood has gone off the deep end in trying to project a certain political ideology and this has hurt the overall film industry. It is no wonder that when a good movie like this comes out, it is not given a second look and is soon forgotten. It's sad.
