I give a ton of credit to the director, who also wrote, edited and produced the film, for creating a stunning looking movie on such a small budget. However, The story just wasn't there. The runtime of 70 minutes still felt far too long and the movie often felt very drawn out at times. I I give a ton of credit to the director, who also wrote, edited and produced the film, for creating a stunning looking movie on such a small budget. I think a 50-60 minute runtime would have fit it a lot better and probably would have improved my overall opinions of it as well. … Expand

Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2019 Verified Purchase Ever wonder what the hero does after all the action? Well, this movie was made for you. He gets the call and off he screen to chop the head of various monsters then comes back and shows us how to make some gross goop, sticks his trophy on his wall (wow, his shack must smell all the way to the castle). Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2019 Verified Purchase "The Head Hunter" is an unrelengtingly grim tale of a lone warrior whose apparent purpose is to protect the inhabitants of a mysterious castle from an onslaught of monsters. The titular character is referred to as "Father" and the only other character is known solely as "Daughter". In between battles the protagonist attends to the mundane tasks of daily survival in a harsh setting. Christopher Rygh's excellent portrayal of the title character is largely silent but physically intense. You will not find highly stylized and choreographed fight scenes in this movie.

The nitty gritty in between where the heros actually live most of the time. Its a real credit to the film makers, battle is mostly a metaphor here and what little fight there is actually takes a back seat to the quiet moments with our nameless warrior. The film is a master class in world building. They virtually have no budget but they make the world a living breathing place that I would love to see more of. Its 3rd act is a little too bare bones and is almost so silly that I felt it might upend the rest of the film. But luckily these sequences are short lived and it quickly heads in the right direction. I would absolutely love to see more adventures in this world. Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2019 Verified Purchase I'll keep it short. The cinematography is great, music, sound fx. Production Design is on point long with costumes. HOWEVER, you gotta show some action! I know its just over an hour but show us ONE fighting scene. For God sake! The off camera shots were very disappointing and made me lose interest.

Sincerely, The Rotten Tomatoes Team Dec 06, 2020 While Rygh does some great acting, and some of the makeup is superb, the story is weak and there is no believable conflict. Also, to the director, we get it... you have a drone. While Rygh does some great acting, and some of the makeup is superb, the story is weak and there is no believable conflict. you have a drone. Oct 29, 2020 It's a good movie and worth a watch. It's more of a fantasy/mood piece though rather than a horror. If you're looking for excitement, action and all that than this probably isn't for you. It's more of a slow film but it's beautifully made, powerful and visually stunning.

Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2019 Verified Purchase Thought this was a fantastic horror/fantasy film. Loved the lore and world that this took place in. Creepy and mysterious land that I wish could be more in a sequel if it could ever happen. Great FX work. Everything just looked dirty, gross, wet, bloody, muddy, etc. Different kind of horror film and I dug it. :) Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2019 Verified Purchase I'm laughing at all the one star reviews and their reasoning. This entire film was done on the budget that a Hollywood movie spends on toilet paper for the lead actor. Not enough explosions and slow motion BS for some people. Now, without giving too much away, no you don't see him fight many of the monsters he kills. This movie was beautifully filmed and conveyed all the loneliness and tension, struggle, mood, fear, etc. To try to show all the monsters in fight scenes on this budget?

Something went wrong, but don't fret — let's give it another shot.

How would that have been done? It would look terrible and not in keeping with the beauty of the rest of the film. But, for a bunch of Millennials who have ZERO imagination I'm sure watching this was a terrible struggle. This was a great example of story of struggle, of pain, showing how hard it was just to survive in this kind of environment, and it also shows that bad things happen to good people and not all stories are meant to have the textbook happy ending. It's creative, it makes me want to see more of this world and the back story behind it, and if you go into this with a little patience and perspective and some imagination and realize it's not a 200 million dollar budget CGI extravaganza then you might actually enjoy yourself. If not, go wait for the next comic book movie to come out and j/o over the computer generated nonsense. Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2019 Verified Purchase This flick examines what happens when Gandalf puts down his staff or Geralt is on his way to the next bounty.

I can't believe this was shot on a budget of $30, 000! Beautiful cinematography, great acting, great effects for the budget and kept me riveted. Highly recommend! I thought Christopher Rygh did an incredible job for his first feature film. Highly recommend! Jun 25, 2020 Decent atmosphere and forest visuals, very predictable. You have to "use your imagination" as all monster fights take place off camera (which really cuts special effects budget by 9/10) and this gets old after awhile. All but one of the bagged monster heads are too small.. like he's chopping people heads (or tiny monsters). Hope to see lead in broader projects as he does have a psycho look & is fairly bad-ass. Did I really pay 3. 99 on Vudu for this? Decent atmosphere and forest visuals, very predictable. 99 on Vudu for this?
