This book is not only filled with some pleasantly interesting characters but also it features a protagonist who has some very advanced layers. The protagonist is not only intelligent but also serious, exceedingly funny and self-deprecating. The story begins as garbage men discover the body of a local politician in his car with the pants around his ankles. Unlike what is done in the United States and other countries, the detective work in Sicily is exceedingly different. However, Inspector Montalbano does most of his investigations under no supervision and most of the time does or follows what he feels like doing. The pace in this book is somewhat relaxed. Additionally, this book does not have the typical action adventure style that we are all accustomed to. Everything in this book is reveled in a matter of fact style and a story-telling manner. Additionally, there are plenty of questions to answer in the book, which in turn leaves the reader guessing about what s to happen next. As he goes about his day, Inspector Montalbano manages to fit in a love interest and also some exceedingly fantastic gourmet food.
