Bad Day For The Cut
He soon gets much more excitement than he'd wanted when he awakes one night in a beery haze to find his mother dead in the parlor, the victim of an apparent home-invasion robbery. After the funeral, he's ambushed by two masked toughs who bungle staging his "suicide. " He kills one and takes the other captive, discovering his prisoner, Bartosz (Jozef Pawloski) is a scared young man who'd been blackmailed into the attacks to protect his sister (Anna Prochniak), who's being held by human traffickers. The two drive to Belfast, hoping to save the girl and avenge mum's death in one fell swoop. Of course, that plan grows a lot more complicated when they must fend off a rogue's gallery of criminal-syndicate thugs who stand between them and the chief of the operation, lethally ruthless Frankie (Susan Lynch). It turns out the seemingly arbitrary slaying of Donal's ma was no accident, having grown from roots that go back to 1970s IRA violence and other shared family secrets. The film is at its best when the s–t first hits the fan, as burly, unworldly Donal's surprisingly (though not quite preposterously) nimble responses to a series of not-incredibly bright enforcers leaves each of the attackers humiliated and/or dead.

I really love these gritty non-Hollywood Indie dramas. They're usually, but not always, made in England, Ireland or Scotland. Just a simple premise, amazing story and subdued acting. Usually have some sort of crime element. All of these movies were fantastic (I highly recommend them if you haven't seen them. ) If anyone has recos similar to these, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Cinematographer Ryan Kernaghan emphasises the sense of isolation in rural Ireland from the vast muddy fields to the stretch of empty beach used in the finale. The pitch-dark nights and shadowy encounters with thuggish individuals all add to the film's film noir feel. Director Chris Baugh and co-writer Brendan Mullin are less successful in developing some of the female characters. Bartosz's sister Kaja (Anna Próchniak) is little more than a damsel in distress and Susan Lynch is often reduced to thumping table tops and slamming shut phones in exaggerated exasperation at the incompetent henchmen who consistently fail to follow her orders. Lynch is suitably steely as the ruthless, foul-mouthed Frankie but there is a pantomime quality to the character that she is unable to escape. Despite those reservations, Bad Day succeeds because of the quality of the craftsmanship, the decision to bring a more measured perspective to typical thriller conventions and the performance of Nigel O'Neill who makes a very human and flawed avenger.

Baugh, who co-wrote the film with Brendan Mullin, and makes his feature length film debut, work in a surprising amount of violence in a very small story, layered in some authentic bits of humor that give Bad Day for the Cut plenty of twists. While it's all a bit familiar, as many in the gene almost certainly must be, it's very effective in creating a genuine sense of place and urgency. It strives to be realistic even as Baugh gives it plenty of flare, giving Donal loads of opportunities to bring the pain while keeping him constantly likable. O'Neill is to be given credit for much of that, making Donal an entirely believable man overcome by rage at what seems like the random murder of his mother, learning slowly that there is much about her past she shielded him from.

Donal manages to lock Jerome into a closet as he moves the corpse, and they kidnap Gavigan. Driving out to a forest in his recreational vehicle (RV), Donal tortures Gavigan and learns of his bosses, Frankie and Trevor. Gavigan is able to escape the RV, free himself of his bonds, and report to Frankie that Donal is still alive before Donal and Bartosz find him. During a struggle, Bartosz kills Gavigan. Donal wants to go after Frankie, but Bartosz convinces him to get Kaja first because she knows where Frankie lives. Posing as a customer, Donal arranges to meet with Kaja in an apartment. He persuades her to trust him and knocks out her guard, but when it turns out that Kaja knows nothing about Frankie, Donal returns to torture the guard to get the information he needs. As they are leaving, they run into Jerome, who has come to collect Kaja. Jerome and Donal fight, but in the end Kaja kills Jerome. Donal, Bartosz, and Kaja go to the address they were given, whereupon they find and follow Trevor to Frankie's house.
