A lo largo de la película, el espectador se adentra en la vida diaria de dos grafiteros que viven la ciudad más en la noche en el día, por lo que su contacto con la realidad social se divide entre la marginalidad social y el desarrollo normal de dos adolescentes de diferente procedencia social. La consigna de la familia de Calvin es una frase popular pero muy diciente: "Eso es dar mucha papaya". Dar papaya en esta historia es vivir la nocturnidad en sitios donde las autoridades prefieren ver gente pegando propaganda política que gente pintando las paredes, atendiendo a conciertos, o simplemente disfrutando de la noche. Por otro lado, la madre de Ras intenta a través de la presión social de sus vecinos adentrarlo en el mundo religioso de la comunidad, en la que la palabra de Jesucristo tiene más peso que su propia conciencia.
En el film El Profeta (Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet), Orfales es una isla imaginaria en la cual vive Almitra, una niña de ocho años. Allí coincide con Mustafá, un preso político. Entre el preso y la niña no tarda en surgir una buena amistad, que parece que va a llegar a su fin. Al menos, la amistad se va a terminar por una buena razón, que es que el gobierno va a liberar a Mustafá. Una vez liberado, los soldados lo escoltan hasta un barco, pues aunque libre, no lo quieren en el país. Almitra sigue a su amigo para ver dónde va, pues no quiere separarse de él ni un momento. Es así como ve a Mustafá compartiendo su conocimiento con la población de la isla, y como se da cuenta de que algo no va bien. Almitra ve que aunque el gobierno ha prometido liberar a su amigo, en realidad tiene otros planes muy malos para él, planes que amenazan su vida.
