The great irony is that in Where Eagles Dare, as in many other films, the actor was himself playing a high-ranking Nazi. The man in question was Anton Diffring. If you don't immediately recognise the name, you'll know him by his picture. Diffring was the lighthaired, steely-eyed German with the aristocratic looks and wonderfully clipped Teutonic accent who specialised in playing the most villainous – and sometimes not quite so villainous – Third Reich figures on screen and television. In Where Eagles Dare he was up against acting legends Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood. But while they were both magnificent as commandos on a mission to rescue an American general from a seemingly impregnable fortress in the Bavarian Alps, would the film have been quite as memorable without Diffring's authoritative presence as Waffen-SS Colonel Paul Kramer?

Biography Diffring was born as Alfred Pollack in Koblenz. His father Solomon Pollack was a Jewish shop-owner who managed to avoid internment by the Nazi authorities and survived the war. His mother Bertha Diffring was Christian. He studied acting in Berlin and Vienna but there is conjecture about when he left Germany prior to World War II. The audio commentary for the Doctor Who series Silver Nemesis mentions that he left Germany in 1936, to escape persecution due to his homosexuality. Other accounts point to him leaving Germany in 1939 and heading for Canada where he was interned in 1940, which is unlikely as he appears in the 1940 Ealing Studios film Convoy released in July as the officer of U-37, although uncredited.

Anton Diffring had two reasons to flee Germany – he was Jewish and gay (Image: Daily Express/Hulton Archive/Getty) Having trained as an actor in Berlin and Vienna, Anton left his homeland in the late 1930s and went first to the US and then to Canada, where he was interned as an "enemy alien". After the war he appeared as Richard III on the Toronto stage. He came to Britain in the late 1940s to try his luck but it took him a while to become established. His first credit in a British film came in 1950, in State Secret. His first main role as a Nazi was in the 1953 prison escape drama Albert R. N. He played a fearsome and obnoxious colonel in the SS who double-crosses a prisoner who wants to escape in order to obtain his gold watch. From then on, he didn't look back. "With the fashion in popular British film-making in the 1950s to make a large number of war films, Diffring suddenly found himself in demand, ironically, like many German émigré actors, playing the very Nazis who forced them out of their homeland, " wrote film historian Ian Fryer.
As a character actor, he got much done with less (time). In François Truffaut 's Fahrenheit 451 (1966) he was cast in all likelihood as a counterpart to the Austrian actor Oskar Werner, so that Werner's own Teutonicness in the English setting wouldn't be as arch. He excelled as Werner's nemesis, as he could create a mood or signal an entire story line with just a look; dialog didn't matter (he likely would have been a superstar in silent films, when it was "the faces" that mattered). Diffring tried to break out of those silken villain roles, moving to Rome in 1968, but producers turned to him again and again to fill their needs for a foreign heavy. He appeared as one of the most infamous Nazis of all, Adolf Hitler 's hangman Reinhard Heydrich, in Operation: Daybreak (1975), and as Hitler's foreign minister Joachim von Ribbentrop in the American mini-series The Winds of War (1983). It made him a good living and it made him known, even if it did not fulfill his artistic ambitions. What made his career such a success in terms of its longevity and fecundity was that Diffring was an actor who was enjoyable to watch.

In 1969, he changed sides and played a British SAS officer in the Italian film Uccidete Rommel. Filmgoers must have been confused to see their favourite German fighting for the Allies. In 1968 Diffring left Britain to go to live in Italy, believing that it would help him get more non-Nazi roles. But for directors everywhere he remained the "go-to" man for German officers and he accepted his fate. The upside of being typecast cast meant that Diffring was always in work and he managed to live well, with his long-time lover. He moved to France and starred in a number of television series including the historical drama Flambards, for Yorkshire TV. In 1983 he played Hitler's foreign minister Joachim von Ribbentrop in The Winds Of War. His final appearance came five years later in Doctor Who, in a special serial Silver Nemesis which marked the 25th anniversary of the BBC sci-fi programme. Diffring admitted he had never watched Doctor Who before but had agreed to appear because the filming meant being in Britain at the time of the Wimbledon tennis championships, which he wanted to see.
